Roland D-70 DLM "wavetable" synthesis
Переглядів 598Рік тому
Quote from the original Roland D-70 brochure, May 1992: DLM (Differential Loop Modulation) lets you create your own customized waveforms for synthesis. DLM's start point and loop length parameters allow you to specify the part of a waveform you want to use. Then complex looping functions using advanced interpolation technology truncate and modulate the part you select to create a new waveform. ...

It’s like a fight between boxers in different weight classes!
Trying to decide between the vulture super 15 with a spare 1500 vs the overstayer modular channel 🤔 Overstayer looks great but fear it would just lead me into a world of endless tweaking and indecision. Do you have experience with it? Thoughts anyone?
Growing up playing guitar through tube amps the vulture just sounds right to me, as flexible as the heat is it’s just a bit to fizzy for my taste.
Vertigo would be nice but way out my budget!
I'm thinking your fingers-length may be noted in Guinness Book of.... I suppose for gimmickry, PolyBrute 12 wins. For Sonics, genius and everything else, it's the SUPER GEMINI.
is there smooth transition when selecting the next sound? looks like the previous sound just cuts off when u select a different sound
Vertigo VSM-2 sounded the best to me by far, very pleasing harmonics. Probably why it's 7,200€
Vertigo VSM-2 is the GOAT
Where is the mod wheel?
Vertigo VSM-2 has no equal, period. Well worth the money if consider all that it does and how well it does it.
This Synth is a modern mixture of Yamaha CS80 and Roland Jupiter8. Sounds great!!
arhitecturally i agree. super6, or one layer of gemini, is pretty much lifted from the Jup6/8. with addition of modern extras like matrix mod, fx and digital waves on the first oscillator. concept doubling this into two layers, each with its row of controls, plus ribbon and poly after touch, comes from CS80. however, built-wise and sound-wise UDO synths have nothing to do with CS80, or Jupiter 8. if i had to compare them to something, i'd rather say UDO character floats btwn the mid80s dco synths like Juno 106 and hybrids like Prophet VS or Kawai K3 from the same era. but all that with somewhat cleaner, modern/hifi presentation instead of actual vintage tone.
@@clusterchord1two further comments: the envelopes are Rolandy, the filter is a little bit too. and you actually can get some very vintage sounding saw or pwm pads out of this thing. the super mode on dds2 applied subtly does this and it sounds massive.
"My synth cost more than your car"
True story, I just bought a Nord stage 4 and I'm still having a heart attack every time I look at my receipt lol..
Ok, but can it also play in the Majnor-Scale? (Also known as „Zoll“)
@strongfilm not with the factory firmware, as soon as there is a firmware exploit my tech team will work on a zoll-scale retrofit. pm me if you are interested.
never heard of this ??!
@@Twelve50TV just joking :)
thannk goodness !😆
sounds a bit like a juno
I think so, too. It also reminds me to the jupiter 8 in a way.
it sounds like a hybrid juno , and yes i suppose there is a jupiter sound to it , i am not too familiar with jupiter although i do have a jupiter plugin , its a decent synth - quite exp - hope you like it@@zerb
This might be one of the greats?
Not much bass to this synth.
There are not too many bass patches in the presets, however i find the bass frequencies coming out of the super gemini are somehow detailed and clean, maybe you have to give them a little boost, but i think the bass sounds amazing, especially below 100hz
Got mine yesterday Monday 18th, have you updated the firmware?
I updated the firmware twice, actually. It’s a simple process, just keep the patch button pressed while turning on the super Gemini. Then you’re able to mount it as USB drive on your computer and copy the new firmware. Eject the drive and power cycle the super Gemini.
Yeah super easy to do, it’s a class compliant synth so no drivers are required. I’ve also got the hydrasynth desktop, so really looking forward to using the ribbon and poly aftertouch with it. Do you know if the Super 6 patch banks are compatible with the Gemini?
@@TheadventuresofMrTibbs the super 6 patches don‘t seem to be compatible with the super gemini, at least with os 1.12
How are the sliders on yours? A few on mine don't feel as stiff as others
The sliders feel really good, maybe one or two need a little less force when moving. it is so subtle, I realised just now because you asked.
I thought that, I sold the desktop S6 to get this and I felt that that was rock solid in terms of build, the toggle switches and sliders don't feel as high quality on the SG. Might be completely wrong on this though. Main thing however, it sounds amazing and very pleased with it.
@@MattCulpini had a super 6 for a few days, as far as i remember the sliders felt the same.
Thank you for posting this and showing how the synth really is I feel like everyone has only shown one amazing pad or just ambient stuff. This really gives you an idea of if it’s for you or not or what it’s capable of which I truly appreciate. Thank you so much. What are your initial thoughts?
Glad you like the video! My initial thoughts after a couple of days with the super gemini: beautiful filter, perfect keybed, polyphonic aftertouch and touchbar are very expressive, very clean and precise oscillators, very intuitive user interface, great loopable envelopes, similar to jupiter 8 like crossmod, great stereo/binaural sounds. It reminds me to the prophet VS combined with an analog version of a jd-800, in a way :) But: i have the feeling it is way easier to get fat, saturated sounds out of a prophet 5 or oberheim obx8/a. The Super Gemini is stronger in complex modulated high resolution hybrid sounds, imo.
Very good to know cause i have obx8, thank you for the info
tierisch!
Interesting synth. Many possibilities.👌.Is the manual ok?
The user Manual? Didn‘t touch it yet :) The manual panel mode? Feels perfect!
I’m eagerly still awaiting mine, hoping it arrives in time for Christmas!
I hope it does! Its such a beautiful instrument. May i ask where you are located and when you placed your order?
@@zerbI am in California and I place my pre-orders 10 days ago
Ian Pooley - a living legend !! The absolutly Master !!
Totally usable for old school bombap or modern ambient drone music. Too bad Roland didn't make a module version of it.
Great video, thanks.
This is how you do a gear comparison video. Thumbs up.
I guess these sounds were too avant-garde for the musicians / times back then. Just like 'edmx' I was very curious. More over, I couldn't find examples, sounds or video's about this, until now! Big thanks!
always wanted to find out about this....
Beautiful But Why?
I guess its the harmonic distortion playing your synapses….
Es…es ist wunderschön🥹
Elysia is the best considering cost. Vertigo you’re paying a shitload more for marginally better
Culture Vulture is literally 6db louder than every other demo
A whole documentary in under 9 minutes
is this his prior studio? I follow him on IG and his current studio looks more like a country retreat?
This is someone else's - if you check out the channel there's another comparison with a different artist as well.
One of my favorites!!!
Vertigo VSM is £7k and doesnt have a dry/wet comtrol lol
It has a THD Mix for both the 2nd and the 3rd order generator. Its the most versatile device but it certainly has a price tag
"Lets try the big guy.." Camera pans over the the Akai rythm wolf :P
The Vertigo VSM-2 is £6,750.. For that money it better make sunday dinner and re-decorate the hallway aswell.
Just bought a Culture Vulture Super 15 and a Fat Bustard. I have been trying to find decent videos demoing them and thankfully came across this. I am very excited to get using my new toys. They just seem to WORK and sound right. Great demo thank you, I am subscribed now! 🙌
Thank you for subscribing! Since i am not posting too regularly, its always good to have the notification bell checked :) Enjoy your new gear, happy to see videos about it!
i wonder how much the band-limiting has to do with the vsm-2 being great. with some simple pre-emphasis and post-de-emphasis EQ in the computer, maybe a simple tube gainstage would be even better.
never used the dark color on the karacter :(
is A (ampex preamp) mode your favorite on Decap? looks like it's what you were using here. I'm not convinced--especially after this favorable comparison with the Thermionic--hw saturation is necessary, but tape is another story. Decap was a little brighter, was that the only difference?
Need to use my Heat more, 2021 res.
I have all the others in software... but I’d love the Vertigo as Hw 🥰
Culture Vulture and VSM were my favorite. Amazing how the uad plugin versions were able to retain the same vibe. I use them all the time and sound was very recognizable on both. Great demo
Decapitator has an emulation of Culture Vulture. That's why they sound identical)
Would be interesting processing with the Euterpe Vertice filterbank
artistc sonic sculptering. would be interesting to hear the "VSM Vertigo" in combination with the "ESL Vertice" analog filterbank, or the "Schippman Ebbe und Flut"
Nice review man, thanks for doing this vid. I really like and prefer the VSM-2, sounds tight, with depth and 3D over the other units, stereo image never gets thin.. As soon as its activated that snare, wow!
Culture Vulture was head and shoulders above. The others weren’t as complex, the presence and grit just weren’t there in the same way. When I want distortion, that’s what I’m looking for, the little fluctuations too, I want some jagged edges. The Elektron sounded the worst to me by far, the Elysia didn’t go far enough and the Vertigo seemed nice overall but also glossier than the Vulture. 1. Vulture 2. Vertigo 3. Elysia 4. Elektron
Considering the Elektron is 10x cheaper…..
What if videos like this replaced product names with their price. Guys just say: "I just loved $7,200. To my ear, it's got something special that $800 lacks, though $800 is pretty nice itself. Frankly, I was expecting more from $2,400." 😄
Haha good way to look at it!
Great comparison! Would love to see another comparison but on synthesizer sounds only.
